The Friends of the RBG Cranbourne and the Australian Plants Society Victoria are inviting anyone who is interested to come and celebrate the completion of the Encyclopaedia of Australian Plants suitable for Cultivation after over 30 years of enduring endeavour.
The authors Rodger Elliot and David Jones, and the illustrator Trevor Blake, will be in attendance with their partners-in-crime’ – Gwen, Barbara and Beryl.
This celebration will be held from 12:00 noon on Sunday 14 March 2010 at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne in the Woodlands Picnic Area adjacent to the Australian Garden.
It will be a BYO picnic celebration and it will be wonderful to have everyone together on this very special day.
Volume 9 of the Encyclopaedia will be available from 1 February 2010 and will be on sale at the celebration.

* MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW MARCH 2010

Victorias biggest and most prominent horticultural event each year is the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. This year it is again being held in the Exhibition Gardens and Buildings. It will be on from Wednesday the 24th March to Sunday the 28th March.

The RHSV will have a prominent place in the exhibition. The annual Great Victorian Hanging Basket Competition has grown fantastically and now over 220 clubs, societies, members, schools are attempting to gain a Guinness World Record by becoming the Largest Hanging Basket Competition in the WORLD.

We need your support to achieve this. The baskets are growing at their own pace and will be bloomingly great on the day. When you attend the show head straight for the hanging basket site. Ask where it is at the gate or at any information booth.

The RHSV also has an area in the Exhibition Buildings as well. Again with the support of our affiliates we will represent amateur horticulture to the public.

All of this is to promote our affiliates and gardening in general.

Many of our affiliates work with children at educational or other institutions.

Many also participate in activities at public events such as “potting up” stands with children

For your own sake and others that you may involve in the many great public activities that our affiliates get involved in please ensure that you have the appropriate clearances required.

The Working With Children Check is free for Volunteers. You must supply a photo. It is as annoying as a flu shot.

Your integrity is not in doubt, it is just a sad reflection on the times we now live in.

Our affiliates do so much great work and children are the gardeners of tomorrow so do not let the check stop you.

* 2010 BASKET COMPETITION CLOSES WITH RECORD ENTRIES

The 2010 Great Victorian Hanging Basket Competition has closed for entries. We have received a record number this time and we look as if we will well and truly get into the Guiness Book of Records for the Biggest Hanging Basket Competition.

The Basket Kits are about to be delivered to the Nurseries to be picked up by the entrants. Basket growers will be notified by mail when to pick up their kits.

The competition is a great opportunity to have some fun. If you have missed out this year start planning for next year. Come and visit the show and see what you are up against.

It is a wonderful thing to claim that you are well and truly a real

“BASKET CASE”.

* DISASTER RELIEF FUND

The RHSV was there after the Ash Wednesday fires to help recovery and we are there again after last years horrible events in Victoria. We have established an ongoing fighting fund , supported by gardeners throughout Australia that will provide asistance for the ravaged areas to recover and give support to those affected.

We are aiming in some small way to help heal the memories of the events and to on return the areas to the wonderful environments that was there.

The Latrobe Valley is the scene of a world class Rose Garden.

The Morewell Centenary Rose Garden received the prestigious “Award of Garden Excellence” from the World Federation of Rose Societies Convention held in Vancouver in June 2009.

This is big by any standard. You are invited to share their moment when a plaque is unveiled in the garden on Monday 9th November.

If you cannot make this event the gardens will still be there to view.

It shows that Australian Gardeners are up there with the best.
